BEFORE YOU START
1. Check your Wifi-Network credentials
Before connecting your device to the desired WiFi network, make sure the SSID/password combination is correct. As many customers choose to isolate their IoT equipment on a distinct network that they do not otherwise connect to, it is best practice to connect your phone to the desired network to ensure the SSID/ password combination is correct.
The phone or computer you are using to setup WiFi must be within 10 feet/3 meters of the Element-D.
2. Unplug Ethernet Cables
Ensure that the Elemental Machines device that is being added to the WiFi network does not have an ethernet cable plugged in.
3. Captive Portal and Hidden Networks
Elemental Machines devices cannot be connected to a network via a captive portal. A captive portal requires interaction with a webpage via a web browser.
Elemental-C and D devices cannot be connected to hidden networks using this procedure. Hidden networks do not publicly broadcast their SSID. Please contact help@elementalmachines.com for support regarding connecting Gateway, GW2's and GW3's to a hidden network.
WIFI CONNECTION PROCESS
If, during this process, you have to change the configuration of the WiFi router for any reason, re-start the Element-D to pick up any changes made to WiFi network settings.
1. Find the serial number of your device. It is located on the device label as pictured:
2. Connect your device to power and wait 60 seconds for the device to initialize.
3. On your phone or laptop, connect to the wireless network as shown. You will see a network named “EM Setup xxxxxxx”, where xxxxxx is the first seven characters of the device’s serial number printed on the label.
Note: Some devices, including Android phones may prompt you to “Sign in to network EM Setup 67F60E6”. If your device asks you to “sign in”, please do so.
4. You will see a screen with a drop-down list of available network SSIDs as pictured. Select the network SSID to which you want to connect your device.
5. Enter the password/passphrase for the network you’ve chosen and select “Connect”. Your phone/computer will disconnect from the device’s WiFi and the device will connect to the chosen network.
6. Wait 60 seconds, then check available WiFi networks on your phone or laptop. You should no longer see the “EM Setup xxxxxx” network. If you do, then the Element was unable to connect to the selected network. Return to step 3 and try again.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
Changing Networks once connected
Element-C, D, and Gateway, GW2/GW3's will only run the setup process if they have not already been connected to a wifi network. They will not run the setup process if they have been hardcoded with wifi network credentials.
If you wish to change from one working network to another or if you are moving lab sites please contact help@elementalmachines.com before making any changes to the devices.Incorrect Network Credentials
If during the setup process you enter in the wrong network credentials and the device does not connect to the network, re-start the device, and it will automatically restart the setup process. Go to Step 1 and repeat the setup process.
Captive Portal
Do not connect the Elemental Machines devices to a Captive Portal network. A Captive Portal typically requires a login via a web browser.
Cellular Data
The Elemental Machines system features Cellular data as a backup method to send device data. The cellular data will only function after connecting the Gateway to a wifi network at least once.
